For those who are familiar with the recent history of the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse, they
know it used to house a location of American Hosteling International. For eleven summers (1992 -2002), George and Jean Cougler were the hosts at the site. Visitors at the hostel were always treated as personal guests of the Couglers, and as a result, there were several who returned year after year to enjoy their hospitality. One of the events Jean and George held every year was an ice cream social, and the public was always invited. Residents of the area looked forward to attending the social and spending time on the beautiful grounds surrounding the lighthouse. For several years during and after her work at the hostel, Jean was an active member of the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse Historical Society. In August 2017, the TPLHS decided to revive the idea of holding an ice cream social as a way of giving back to the community. Jean’s experience in having hosted the event for years was invaluable. Unfortunately, Jean passed away in January of 2018 leaving a very big hole in our organization and our hearts. In Jean’s honor, the annual ice cream social event has been renamed Jean Cougler Day. Jean Cougler Day is an annual event held on the second Sunday in August. The date was chosen to fall between National Lighthouse Day (August 7) and International Lighthouse Day/Weekend that is held the third full weekend in August. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy free ice cream sundaes, music, and socializing at the beautiful point where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River. Ice cream is available beginning at 1:00 PM, but everyone is encouraged to come early and stay late. Our sunsets are spectacular!
